Don’t Believe Everything You Read

Despite what you may have read on the Blood-Horse website, the Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth was great.

Yeah, there were a few greenhorn mutuel clerks who didn’t know a Daily Double from a Pick Four, but every window was open.

The weather DID suck.

The track was in amazing shape however and the races were particularly formful.

It was unfortunate that folks had to pay big money for uncovered seats and that they had to stand indoors part of the day, but ask any “cheesehead” how much they pay to be frozen like a Popsicle at a Green Bay game during Thanksgiving weekend and the Breeders’ Cup tickets sound cheap.

The grandstand food WAS marginal and expensive.

I survived on a weenie and a diet coke for 10 races on Friday and 11 on Saturday while doing the national radio broadcast for the Horse Racing Radio Network. Both never tasted so good.

How ‘bout the horses?

Maryfield and Corinthian on Friday…Midnight Lute, English Channel and Curlin on Saturday…”All I can say is, Wow!”

Give the folks at Monmouth Park a break.

God made the days and they had to live through them.

Monmouth never had a four-day championship meeting in the late fall, so they were navigating uncharted waters. They could have sunk in a soggy grave but they rose to the occasion and put on a great show.

If the Breeders’ Cup was minor league this year, it was minor league the way the Lexington Legends are minor league – providing an amazing experience for the fans. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

I covered almost every major race run this summer and fall – from Belmont to Calder to Arlington to Del Mar to Saratoga back to Belmont and then to Keeneland and Monmouth and the most fun I had during that long stretch was the two days of Breeders’ Cup in Oceanport, New Jersey.

Thanks for the memories Monmouth and congratulations on a job well done!
