Keeneland Spot Plays for Opening Day
October 7th, 2010By Jude T. Feld

Fall is here and that means Keeneland! “Fallstars Weekend” will showcase many of the horses headed to Churchill Downs for the Breeders’ Cup in November. Watch the races…pay attention…go to the paddock…give yourself an edge when wagering on racing’s two biggest days, when champions are crowned and the payoffs are life-changing.
If you can’t be at the track, check out the coverage at www.horseracingradio.net. Mike Penna and I will bring you all the stakes action at 96.1 FM (“The Hank”) in Lexington. It is streamed live via the website or you can use the RadioTime app on your droid phone to pick up 96.1 FM.
Here’s a few horses I am considering on opening day’s card:
1st) SECESSIONIST has been facing much better conditioned allowance foes with some success and now drops into a maiden race after being disqualified from his maiden victory last June. Trainer Donnie Von Hemel wins at 24% with Jesus Castanon in the saddle.
3rd) Improving Beyer speed figures, a drop back in distance and stepping down from a Grade 3 stakes into allowance company stamps CALEB’S POSSE the colt to beat here.
4th) Claimed out of his last start by sharp trainer Eric Reed, TAX AND SPEND tipped off his fitness and sharpness with a bullet five-furlong workout at Keeneland on October 1. Couple that with Reed’s “go-to-guy†Junior Alvarado taking the mount and it’s a recipe for a mild upset.
6th) Trainer Rusty Arnold is usually loaded for bear at Keeneland. He’ll saddle MISSED THE POINT who prepped at Arlington and then worked well here on October 2. Expect a top effort with jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard.
10th) LUNAR MIST ran a super third in the Hatoof on Arlington Million day and now drops in for a tag. She should get a great trip from just off the pace and seems to hold a class advantage over this group.
